What Grooming Centre Is Actually Offering

Grooming Centre is one of Nigeria's leading microfinance institutions, and this grant scheme, now in its third edition, reflects their investment in expanding knowledge and applied research in the areas most relevant to their mission: financial inclusion, microfinance, rural development, social enterprise, MSMEs, and women's economic participation.

This is a research grant, not a general scholarship. The money is tied directly to your research project. Grooming Centre is funding students whose academic work produces knowledge that is practically useful to the Nigerian development landscape, particularly in lifting people out of poverty through financial and social mechanisms.

150 grants are available in total. 100 go to undergraduate students at ₦100,000 each, and 50 go to postgraduate students at ₦200,000 each. For a postgraduate researcher working on a relevant thesis or dissertation, ₦200,000 represents meaningful support for data collection, fieldwork, printing, and other research costs that are rarely covered by standard institutional support.

There are no age, gender, religious, or ethnic barriers to application. Any Nigerian student at a NUC or NBTE approved institution whose research falls within the defined focus areas is eligible.

Is This Right for You?

Apply if you are:

  • A Nigerian student currently enrolled at an NUC or NBTE approved university or polytechnic at undergraduate or postgraduate level

  • Conducting or planning research in one of the following areas: financial inclusion, microfinance, rural development, social enterprise, MSMEs, technological development, women in development, or any research aimed at lifting people out of poverty within the Nigerian context

  • Able to secure a written and signed recommendation from your project supervisor, this is a mandatory requirement

  • Able to prepare a research concept of 10 to 15 pages covering introduction, literature review, research methodology, references, and a personal profile page

  • Committed to submitting a final soft copy of your completed research project once your study is finished, this is part of the grant obligation

Do not waste your time applying if:

  • Your research focus has no connection to the defined areas of microfinance, financial inclusion, rural development, social enterprise, MSMEs, women in development, or poverty alleviation in Nigeria

  • Your research is theoretical or internationally focused without relevance to the Nigerian context, the scheme specifically requires practical, innovative research focused on Nigeria

  • You are studying at an institution not approved by the NUC or NBTE

  • You cannot provide a supervisor recommendation letter before the deadline

  • You submit after 23 October 2026

Required Documents

Your application must include:

  1. Research concept paper of 10 to 15 pages containing: introduction, literature review, research methodology, references, and one page of the candidate's personal profile

  2. Written and signed recommendation letter from your project supervisor

  3. Commitment to submit a final soft copy of the completed research project on completion of the study (this is a post-grant obligation, not an upfront document, but applicants should be aware of it)

Grooming Centre has published an abstract guide to assist applicants in structuring their research concept. Applicants should review this guide before writing their concept paper.

Tips Nobody Tells You

1. Your 10 to 15 page research concept is the entire basis of selection, and most applicants underestimate how rigorous this document needs to be.
This is not a scholarship essay or a motivation letter. Grooming Centre is asking for a structured academic document with an introduction, literature review, research methodology, and references. The quality of your literature review demonstrates whether you genuinely understand the existing body of knowledge in your chosen area. The methodology section shows whether your research design is capable of producing the kind of data-inclusive, original insights the grant criteria require. A concept paper that is padded to reach the page limit with vague statements about wanting to help Nigerian development will not survive review. A tightly argued, well-referenced concept that identifies a specific gap in the existing knowledge of financial inclusion or MSME development and proposes a credible method for addressing it will.

2. Your supervisor recommendation should be specific to your research project, not a general character reference.
Grooming Centre requires a recommendation from your project supervisor, not just any academic referee. This person should be the faculty member directly overseeing your research project or thesis. Their letter should speak to the quality of your research concept, your academic capability as a researcher, and the relevance of your work to the grant's focus areas. A generic letter from a lecturer who teaches one of your courses but has no involvement in your research will carry significantly less weight than a specific endorsement from your project supervisor who can speak directly to the originality and merit of the work you are proposing.

3. The post-grant obligation to submit a final research copy is a real commitment, factor it into your application timeline honestly.
Grooming Centre requires a final soft copy of your completed research project after the grant is awarded. This is not optional. It is the mechanism by which the organisation captures the knowledge output they are funding. Before applying, be honest with yourself about your research timeline: if you are an undergraduate who will complete your final year project within the next academic year, this obligation is manageable. If your postgraduate thesis has a longer and more uncertain completion timeline, factor in how and when you will fulfil this commitment. Accepting a grant with no realistic path to completing and submitting the final research copy creates an obligation you cannot ignore.

Why This Grant Is Worth Pursuing

Nigeria's financial inclusion gap, its MSME development challenges, and the barriers facing women in economic participation are not abstract policy concerns. They are daily realities for millions of Nigerians, and the academic research that helps policymakers, microfinance institutions, and social enterprises understand and address these realities is genuinely underfunded at the student level.

Grooming Centre's decision to fund 150 student researchers rather than a handful of established academics reflects an understanding that knowledge generation begins at the point of research training. A final year undergraduate whose project examines the impact of mobile money on rural women traders in Kogi State, or a postgraduate whose dissertation analyses MSME credit access barriers in the informal economy, is producing knowledge that has direct practical value to institutions like Grooming Centre itself.

The grant also signals something valuable on a CV: that an independent institutional evaluator reviewed your research concept, found it meritorious, and funded it. For a student planning to pursue further academic work, apply for competitive fellowships, or enter the development finance or social enterprise sector after graduation, a Grooming Centre research grant is a concrete, verifiable credential that most of your peers will not have.

With 100 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate grants available, the odds are more favourable than most competitive funding opportunities. But the research concept paper requirement means only serious, well-prepared applicants will be competitive.

The deadline is 23 October 2026. Begin your concept paper now.
